At Bluemink Chicago, we deemed it absolutely necessary to not only provide quality jewelry, but we believe it is imperative to do so responsibly and without astronomical mark up costs.
Ethical Products + Materials
When sourcing materials we investigated the ethical factors of the source of our materials. We investigated our sources by asking these questions: Are their operations legal? Are they legally mining? Are the mines safe for the individuals who work there? What are their trade practices? Are they being mindful of their environmental impact by reducing waste? We believe that sources that are fairmined are able to provide us with assurance that their practices meet our qualifications. By doing this, we are confident that we are providing our clientele with quality pieces while retaining our ethical production efforts.
To achieve true sustainability in the jewelry world, a level of activism and sourcing of sustainable jewelry supplies is required, that most jewelry producers can’t immediately achieve or afford. Even if they refer to themselves as ethical, or responsible jewelers, even if their hearts are in the right place, they are rarely sustainable jewelry designers. If they are making conscious decisions to improve, to try and raise the bar every day on their sustainable jewelry making practices, constantly seeking new sources and new methods to improve the lives of others while protecting the planet, it is a step in the right direction. It isn’t easy, but more and more sustainable jewelry companies are doing the work of creating ethical, responsible and eco-friendly sustainable jewelry. If consumers continue to ask for it, responsible jewelry options will continue to grow and grow.
Ethical Practices + Policies
There's more to ethics in jewelry other than material sourcing. Developing Business Operations that meet sourcing criteria is equally critical. We implemented simple practices and policies to help us operate ethically. We instilled best practices by asking these questions: Have we selected sustainable and recyclable packaging? How can we reduce waste on product? In what ways can we use renewable energy? How can we keep our clientele and staff safe during COVID-19? Are our store policies concise and straightforward?
At Bluemink Chicago, it worth creating an ethical or environmental impact policy for our business that we can share with your clients. We explicitly lay out the ethical decisions that we make on our website and in our communication with our clientele. We understand and recognize that all that we do has an impact on the planet and we are determined and committed to working towards eco friendly sustainable jewelry. We are constantly endeavoring to ensure that our ethical jewelry and sustainability standards are forefront in our decision-making process. We aim to continue to be as transparent as possible when it comes to the origins of our products and we endeavor to ensure that our materials are responsibly sourced and continuing to demonstrate our commitment to tackling climate change and making sure that all materials are manufactured in a responsible manner.
